At the risk of us sounding old, things just aren’t like they used to be, are they? Nowadays, if the kids aren’t staring at their phones, they’re staring at their tablets, laptops or handheld video game consoles. That’s just not how things were in our day. We didn’t spend every hour of the day staring at some screen we held in our hand. We spent our spare time far more productively… by staring at the television set! It was an entirely different, much better time, we tell you!
Okay, okay, so maybe staring at one large screen all day isn’t ostensibly that different from staring at a bunch of smaller screens all day. Even so, it makes for a more communal experience when everyone in the household is sat together watching the same thing at the same time.
Not to mention the fact that, back in the old days, binge-watching wasn’t really an option, unless you’d gone to the effort and expense of either videotaping an entire season of a show, or buying a VHS boxset. Most of the time, we had to wait a whole week for the next episode of our favourite show – and this arguably meant we developed a stronger bond with the shows and their characters than tends to be the case these days.
