Just when you thought nothing in this world could shock you anymore, Weetabix comes out with the suggestion that their breakfast cereal can be eaten with – wait for it! – baked beans.

It began innocently enough, with a tweet from the British breakfast giants declaring, “Why should bread have all the fun, when there’s Weetabix? Serving up @HeinzUK Beanz on bix for breakfast with a twist.”

Sometimes, strange new food suggestions catch on (it doesn’t seem that long ago that a lot of us frowned on the idea of eating chips with mayonnaise…).

However, in this particular instance, reactions are proving pretty extreme, with tens of thousands weighing in on the subject across social media.

Piers Morgan (someone who’s well accustomed with polarising opinion) tried the combo out today on Good Morning Britain, and seemed reasonably on board with the idea – even if his co-host Susanna Reid looked unconvinced.

Morgan suggested this could be “the new beans on toast,” something which could be beneficial as many people (Morgan included) are giving up bread for health reasons.

However, many more disagree. The ensuing furore on Twitter has sparked tens of thousands of tweets, including opinions from Sainsburys, Lidl, Birds Eye, and breadmakers Warburtons, who argue for the continued dominance of beans and toast.

Amusingly, a number of regional Police Twitter accounts, not to mention those of the British and US embassies have also addressed the matter, contemplating the possibility that combining baked beans with Weetabix is a genuine crime.
