“Blockbuster Video, Wow, What A Difference!”

Streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon are great, they really are. They enable us to choose from thousands of TV shows and films that are ready to watch anywhere, anytime, at the simple click of a button. But despite their amazing convenience and simplicity, we still sometimes miss the way things used to be…

Everyone who grew up during the 1980s should remember Blockbuster. The thrill of walking round your local store, pursuing the different VHS boxes, reading the blurb on the back and looking at the amazing covers and photos. There was so much choice and it was so difficult to choose what you were going to rent next, but that was half the fun…

Sadly, due to the aforementioned streaming services, Blockbuster are no more. In fact, according to Blockbuster their last store closed in January of 2014. However, on 23rd April 2016, this Tweet appeared:

‘The World’s Last Blockbuster’ are fighting to keep the dream alive. Located in the United States “Located between 3rd and Main in the Oak Lawn Shopping Center” (wherever that is), they’ve amassed 295’000 followers on Twitter, mainly due to their downright hilarious Tweets. Below we’ve selected some of their very finest posts, but do check out @loneblockbuster on Twitter for many more:

They seem to have regular film screenings…

They often hint at the financial strain they’re under…

They seem to be well aware of the opposition they face…

They’re definitely up to speed with current affairs…

They’re often having issues with their customers…

And they sometimes need help with their computers…

They often post staff profiles…

And they’re partial to a questionnaire…

Please do let us know your memories of renting from Blockbuster, and be sure to share this post with your friends and family so they too can reminisce about how great it was back in the ‘good old days’.
