Always wanted to invent your own sweet? Well, here’s your chance!

Swizzels, the genius sweet-makers behind icons such as Refreshers, Love Hearts, and Fruity Pops, are searching for someone to come up with a new tasty treat to be made at their factory in Derbyshire.

The competition is to celebrate the company’s 90th year crafting legendary taste sensations, and the winner will have the chance to see their creation on cornershop shelves next to the likes of Drumsticks and Palma Violets.

A panel of Swizzels judges will choose the four best entries submitted online, then ask the public to vote on their favourite. The winner will receive a V.I.P tour of the factory and get to watch their sweet being made.

Managing director of Swizzels, Jeremy Dee, said: “We’re hugely proud to be celebrating 90 years of Swizzels. We’ve stood the test of time thanks to our loyal fans, both old and new, with some having enjoyed our classic inventions for decades.

“We’ve been busy coming up with exciting inventions for generations, and now it’s time for our fans to get creative and help us make the next big sweet invention!”

While new product development manager Emma Herring added: “We’re calling on our fans to come up with weird and wonderful flavour combinations or new twists on classic tastes.

“The winner will get to work with our product development team to see their ideas become a reality. Good luck!”

Swizzels has been making its beloved sweets since the early 20s and began as a market stall in Hackney, London. The owners, Maurice and Alfred Matlow, sold jellied sweets, before opening their first factory in East London in 1928.

In 1940, the Blitz forced the brothers to move their factory to New Mills, Derbyshire, where it’s remained ever since. Signature sweets Palma Violets were released in 1946, followed by Love Hearts in 1954, and Drumsticks in 1957.
