Goonies actor Sean Astin is famed for seeking out long-lost treasure, but now he’s unearthed a previously undiscovered gem of his own, and all for a good cause.
Astin has shared the original audition video which helped him land the role of Mikey Walsh in the 1985 Steven Spielberg-produced family classic.
Now aged 49, Astin posted the eight-minute clip of him auditioning way back in 1984 to social media, along with a plea for donations to the Red Cross, in light of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
Astin says, “Hey you guuys, I’ve been waiting 35 years to share this with you! While we’re in this tough spot, may we all share a spirit of adventure.”
The actor asks his Instagram followers, “Please DONATE $1 to the @americanredcross right now & if you can, GIVE BLOOD.”
The Goonies was Astin’s first film role, and it was one that got him started on a long and prolific acting career.
Outside of the Richard Donner-directed treasure-hunting romp, Astin is most famous for playing Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Astin’s other best-known roles include Toy Soldiers, Encino Man, TV’s 24, and season two of Netflix’s Stranger Things
