It’s not just speeding that drivers need to be careful anymore, as new LED cameras that can detect all manner of vehicular misdemeanours begin to hit British roads.
The new speed camera, nicknamed the ‘yellow vulture’, can tell whether a driver is eating, drinking or smoking at the wheel.
The yellow vulture can also detect if a driver is using their phone or not wearing a seatbelt, both of which are illegal in the UK.

Though it’s not illegal to eat, drink or smoke while driving, if police determine a driver is not in proper control of the car as a result, they can be prosecuted for careless driving.
The new cameras, which have already begun to appear in the south of England, use infrared technology to catch motorists out.

And the yellow vulture doesn’t just get a better look at what’s happening inside the vehicle than previous speed cameras.
Yellow vultures also use their precision technology to tell exactly how fast a car is going, which could lead to fines for cars going just 1mph over the speed limit.

With the older, more imprecise cameras, the rule of thumb for drivers was that any less than 10% plus 2mph faster than the limit would mean avoiding a fine.
The new cameras also work day or night and in any and all weather conditions.

Despite their nickname, yellow vultures don’t resemble the speed cameras of old in colour, shape or size.
Smaller and much less brightly-coloured, the yellow vulture is much harder to spot.
