We all dream of being the hero of our own movie, don’t we? At least every once in a while, all of us imagine our own lives played out as a big-screen adventure or romance in which we are the lead, all the central action revolves around us and all the major developments hinge on the decisions that we make.

However, in movies as in life, you’re not going to get too far without friends – and it might be argued that any hero is only as strong as their sidekick. This supporting character could be the lead’s lifelong best pal; alternatively, they might be someone with whom the hero has a slightly antagonistic relationship, but which develops into an unexpected respect. Whatever the case may be, if the hero doesn’t have anyone to bounce off, it’s going to make it that bit trickier for the audience to develop any kind of connection to them.

Alas, the sidekick’s lot isn’t always a happy one. Sometimes they’re left for dead, giving the hero motivation for revenge; other times they stay by the sidelines, without much clear purpose other than to cheer the hero on. Worse yet, they have a tendency to be completely forgotten about by the audience.
