Superman star Margot Kidder’s death was a result of suicide, a coroner has ruled, contradicting an earlier claim that the actress had died ‘peacefully in her sleep’.

Park County Coroner’s office in Colorado issued a statement on Wednesday that revealed Kidder had actually died from a drug and alcohol overdose.

Kidder was found dead in her Montana home, aged 69, on May 13 of this year. A statement from Kidder’s manager, Camilla Fluxman Pines, at the time had claimed that Kidder had died ‘peacefully in her sleep’.

However a conflicting picture of Kidder’s death was given by her friend and journalist Jeffrey St Clair, who wrote five days after Kidder’s death that she died “lying helplessly on the floor of her house”.

Kidder had struggled with mental health issues all her life. She was in 1990 diagnosed as having bipolar, something that became tragically clear to fans when Kidder suffered a manic episode in 1996. Kidder had previously attempted suicide aged just 14.

“It’s a big relief that the truth is out there”, said Kidder’s daughter Maggie McGuane on Wednesday. “It’s important to be open and honest so there’s not a cloud of shame in dealing with this.”
