Whilst being a rich and famous Hollywood actor certainly has many benefits, we also understand that no matter how much wealth you’ve accrued, it still must be extremely difficult to live your life under the spotlight of the world’s media.
We all know that building a good relationship takes time, effort and patience, and the pressure created by the scrutiny stars constantly find themselves under must make it even harder for the residents of Tinseltown to develop the kind of partnerships that will last throughout life’s inevitable ups and downs.
Add to that the issue of actors being away from their other halves for months on end as they shoot their latest blockbuster, which must only put further strain on the bond they have with the partner that they’re unable to see as much as they would like.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise when we hear stories of actors having an affair with co-stars, situations that are only made worse by the media fallout that inevitably ensues. Below are eight of the most well known and well-publicised examples of such Hollywood celebrity indiscretions.
8. Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher
Rumours were rife upon the release of the original Star Wars and its two sequels that Han Solo and Princess Leia’s chemistry wasn’t just consigned to a galaxy far, far away, but it wasn’t until the release of the late Carrie Fisher’s 2016 book The Princess Diarist that the truth finally emerged.
Fisher revealed that she and Ford, who was 14 years older than her and married with two children at the time, did indeed engage in a three-month relationship that they managed to keep a secret for many years. Clearly Ford wasn’t as much of a stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder as we thought!
7. Ted Danson and Whoopi Goldberg
Ted Danson had been married for 15 years when he met Whoopi Goldberg on the set of their 1993 comedy Made in America, but this didn’t stop the co-stars quickly becoming an item.
The affair contributed to Danson and his wife Cassandra Coates separating, a divorce that became known as one of the costliest in Hollywood history, reportedly costing Danson $30 million.
6. Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe
Despite reports at the time suggesting that it was Meg Ryan’s affair with Russell Crowe on the set of their 2000 film Proof of Life that ended her marriage to actor Dennis Quaid, later reports revealed that there were indiscretions on both sides of the relationship.
Ryan later claimed that their breakup was also partly down to Quaid not being faithful to her, saying “Russell didn’t break up the marriage. He was definitely there at the end, but it wasn’t his fault.”
5. Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter
Kenneth Branagh had been in a relationship with Emma Thompson for seven years when he starred alongside Helena Bonham Carter in the 1994 film Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which Branagh also directed.
Branagh and Bonham Carter started a relationship that would last for five years, and despite Emma Thompson revealing that “I had my heart very badly broken by Ken,” Branagh himself was later quoted as saying that “it’s always sad, marriages breaking up. But I refuse to be affected over issues like this.”
4. Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig
Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig were both in long term relationships when they met on the set of the 2011 horror film Dream House, Weisz for nine years with director Darren Aronofsky and Craig for seven years with producer Satsuki Mitchell.
Weisz and James Bond star Craig married less than a year after beginning their affair, and have become known as one of Hollywood’s most private couples, with Weisz revealing that “one of the great pleasures of not being an adolescent is that you don’t have to share everything.”
3. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
Their relationship may have soured in an extremely public way in recent years, but Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were once extremely loved up after getting together during the filming of the 2011 film The Rum Diary.
Unfortunately, at the time Depp had been married for 14 years to the model, actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, with whom he also has two children.
2. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
We’re heading a bit further back in time now to the 1960s, when Hollywood legends Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton engaged in a romantic relationship after meeting on the set of the 1963 historical epic Cleopatra.
At the time both of the stars were married, Burton to actress Sybil Williams and Taylor to Eddie Fisher, who was already her fourth husband. Burton and Taylor would divorce after 10 years of marriage, only to divorce each other again after a second attempt at marriage which only lasted for 10 months.
1. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
In probably the most well-known example of co-star indiscretion that we’ve had over the last couple of decades, Brad Pitt, who was at the time married to Friends sweetheart Jennifer Aniston, engaged in an affair with the already divorced Angelina Jolie after the pair met whilst filming the 2005 action-comedy Mr and Mrs Smith.
Despite having three children together and adopting another three, the couple’s marriage later turned sour, with Jolie filing for divorce in 2016.
