10 Mugshots Of Celebs From The 1980s

A decade of excess (for the rich and famous, at least), while the 1980s may have produced great art, the era also gave us a whole generation of celebrity hellraisers just itching to make trouble with the law.

It’s those celebrities, those rabble-rousers who first made waves in the 80s and subsequently found themselves the subject of a police portrait, that we focus on today.

Here are ten 80s celebs, and the crimes that landed them with a priceless mugshot to go along with that rap sheet.

10. Josh Brolin

Who?

Oscar-nominated actor who started out in The Goonies and has lately become the star of not one but two Marvel franchises. Also Barbra Streisand’s stepson.

What did they do?

During the filming of W, Oliver Stone’s biopic of former President George W Bush which would feature Brolin as the lead, Brolin and his co-star Jeffrey Wright were at a bar when a fight broke out. They were arrested along with five members of the W crew, but any charges were later dropped.

9. Woody Harrelson

Who?

TV star, then movie star, Woody Harrelson started out in the sitcom Cheers before making the transition into film, becoming a character actor-for-hire in blockbusters and indies alike.

What did they do?

Woody Harrelson has been no stranger to legal troubles, having been arrested numerous times over the years, but Harrelson’s first arrest in 1982 was a result of the actor drunkenly dancing in the middle of a busy road. When the authorities arrived, he jumped on top of the police van and proceeded to resist arrest. Paying a fine got him off the hook.

8. Mel Gibson

Who?

American actor who many will remember for being Australian throughout the 1980s, in which time he starred in the successful Mad Max and Lethal Weapon movies. Was also Braveheart.

What did they do?

In 2006, as his marriage to first wife Robyn was on the slopes, Gibson’s car was stopped in California for speeding. He was arrested for driving under the influence after confronting the arresting officer with: “f***ing Jews… the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world – are you a Jew?” Gibson issued public apologies, but has carried a reputation for the incident ever since.

7. Matt Dillon

Who?

In the 80s, a young star of Rumble Fish, The Outsiders and Drugstore Cowboy, but now an Oscar-nominated actor known for Crash, The House That Jack Built and TV’s Wayward Pines.

What did they do?

While making his way down the highway through Vermont in 2009, Dillon was stopped by police when they clocked the actor driving at 106 mph – in a 65 mph zone – in his rented Chevrolet Impala. He was fined $828.

6. Kiefer Sutherland

Who?

Stand By Me bully, Lost Boy, son of Donald, Young Gun and deliverer of sweet American justice in the long-running Fox series 24.

What did they do?

What we see above is just one photo that has emerged from Sutherland’s many DUI arrests. Sutherland was charged with driving under the influence four times between 1989 and 2007, with the latter costing him $25,000 in bail money. For the 2007 incident documented above, the actor spent 48 days in jail.

5. Mickey Rourke

Who?

Talented yet terminally troubled actor who, for a brief period in the 1980s, was a screen idol for his performances in Diner, Angel Heart and 9 1/2 Weeks. Now something of a Hollywood pariah more famous for a litany of self-destructive plastic surgery procedures than acting.

What did they do?

In July, 1994, Rourke – then on a break from acting to focus on his disastrous boxing career – was arrested by LAPD for allegedly kicking and hitting his wife, Carre Otis. The charges were dropped, but Rourke and Otis divorced two years later.

4. Christian Slater

Who?

Teen heartthrob and star of 80s and 90s favourites including Heathers, Pump Up the Volume and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Now a Golden Globe winner for the tech thriller series Mr Robot.

What did they do?

Arrested a total of four times, three of those for sexually or physically assaulting women, Christian Slater’s 1994 arrest – as recorded in the mugshot above – was for the only slightly less troubling crime of attempting to carry a concealed gun onto a plane. The resulting sentence was a few days of community service.

3. Macaulay Culkin

Who?

Former tot actor who made his name in the 80s and 90s as the child star of such films as Uncle Buck, Richie Rich and of course Home Alone and Home Alone 2. Now makes music and wears shirts depicting Ryan Gosling wearing shirts of himself.

What did they do?

Having largely stayed out of the spotlight after ‘retiring’ from acting in 1994 (aged 14!), Culkin re-entered the public eye as an adult after being arrested in 2004 during a stop and search. Culkin was found to be in possession of cannabis and other drugs for which he didn’t have the required prescription, and was handed three suspended prison sentences.

2. Heather Locklear

What did they do?

To earn the 2008 cop shot above, Locklear got herself arrested for driving under the influence of prescription drugs for anxiety and depression, which caused her to drive and behave unpredictably; she was reportedly blocking traffic and sitting in a daze in her car when police found her. She was sentenced to three years of probation for reckless driving, and forced to pay a $700 fine.

1. Nick Nolte

Who?

In the 80s and 90s, Nick Nolte became an unlikely star as the lead actor in hits such as 48 Hrs, Down and Out in Beverly Hills and Cape Fear. He was also named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1992.

What did they do?

Since his peak, Nolte’s career has taken a nosedive, thanks in large part to persistent problems with drugs and alcohol. In 2002 he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and GHB, for which he was eventually given three years’ probation and an order to undergo counselling. It also led to Nolte giving us the greatest celebrity mugshot of all time.
