These days we might view TV adverts as unnecessary and even downright annoying, but we’re sure you can all remember enjoying them greatly as children! Now we can avoid commercial breaks altogether by watching our favourite shows on catch up, but during the 1980s we had no such luxury, and had to sit through them all from start to end.

Luckily our childhood contained some of the greatest adverts that ever existed, and below we’ve selected 10 of our very favourites…

1. Milky Way – Red And Blue Car

“The red car and the blue car had a race. All red wants to do is stuff his face. He eats everything he sees, from trucks to prickly trees, but smart old blue he took the Milky Way.”

We’ve no doubt that seeing this classic animated Milky Way advert has transported you right back to the 1980s!

2. Kia-Ora – Too Orangey For Crows

“Kia-Ora. Too orangey for Crows, it’s just for me and my dog. I’ll be your dog!”

If we’re honest we had completely forgotten about this advert, but on seeing it again we find that we can recite it from start to finish!

3. Chewits – The Muncher Menace

“Run for your lives, the monster is coming, he’s eating everything in his path! The end of civilisation as we know it. Not quite Professor, it’s a long shot but it might just work…”

Chewits were one of our favourite 80s sweet, and we found out about them from watching this classic Godzilla inspired advert!

4. Yellow Pages – J.R. Hartley

“I don’t suppose you have copy of ‘Fly Fishing’ by J.R. Hartley?”

We’ll be honest and admit that we didn’t quite get this advert when we were kids, and if you’re still struggling, J.R. Hartley is hunting down a copy of his own book!

5. Shake N’ Vac – Dancing Woman

“You do the Shake n’ Vac and put the freshness back, do the Shake n’ Vac and put the freshness back!”

This advert featuring a housewife dancing around the house whilst doing her housework is an absolute classic that will live long in the memory. Watch it and we bet you’ll be singing along!

6. R Whites Lemonade – Secret Lemonade Drinker

“R Whites, R Whites, R Whites Lemonade, I’m a secret Lemonade drinker.”

This advert, starring Elvis Costello’s father, was originally released in 1973, but we definitely remember it being shown right into the 1980s.

7. Levi 501s – Laundrette

“I bet you’re wonderin’ how I knew, bout your plans to make me blue. With some other guy you knew before, between the two of us guys you know I loved you more…”

Played out to the sounds of Marvin Gaye’s ‘I heard it through the grapevine,’ this advert announced the arrival of Levi’s 501 range, and we suspect that for some of you it has lived long in the memory!

8. Scotch Video Tape – Archie The Skeleton

“Re-record not fade away, re-record not fade away, re-record not fade away.”

Scotch video tape promised that every recording on their video tapes would be as good as the first, but we were more interested in the brilliant advert starring Archie the Skeleton!

9. Toys R Us – Magical Place

“There’s a magical place we’re on our way there, with toys in their millions all under one roof, it’s called Toys R Us!”

Sadly Toys R Us is no more, but we’ll always have our memories, and they include this memorable advert that we can still sing along to three decades later.

10. Vitalite – That’s Right
