10 Things About Winona Ryder That Will Surprise You

Winona Ryder has been an icon since the 1980s. We know her from many films such as ‘Beetlejuice’ ‘Heathers’ and many others including bigger-budget films like Alien Resurrection.

Now Winona Ryder has got back to form and is starting to be considered hot property in Hollywood again, with no small thanks to Stranger Things on Netflix, which has become a real phenomenon.

Over the years, Winona Ryder has hit the headlines for the right reasons, but she has also had her demons to face and been in the news for all the wrong reasons, too! Even so, there are plenty of things about Winona that you probably didn’t know or perhaps have forgotten completely about over the years.  Let’s take a look at a few…

1. Her Hiatus.

Remember when she was arrested for shoplifting in 2001? Well, after that, Winona Ryder went home to her parents’ house in San Francisco and re-assessed her life. She even tried new things that she hadn’t been able to do since she started acting, including studying constitutional law, she went to lectures at Berkeley and even made met with activist, Julia Butterfly Hill, who lived in a tree for two years in order to prevent it from being cut down!

2. High Profile Relationships.

Well, doesn’t every famous actress have one? In her case, she had two. The first one was with Johnny Depp in 1989 and then Matt Damon from 1990 to 2000. They are two big names in Hollywood, and both times we thought it could be the one for Winona!

3. Not Pretty Enough.

Apparently, the casting director of ‘Heathers’ told her that she wasn’t pretty enough for the part. So, she went out and got a make over and then came straight back and got it! We love a story where someone comes good and proves the haters wrong!

4. Not Connected.

She doesn’t go online and has no social medial account. She says, “I’m very private so I can’t imagine what I’d want to share with the world. I can’t even take selfies; I literally just learned about the button that makes the screen flip.” She also added, “I think [social media] is a bit dangerous, in terms of self-obsession. It’s so important to look outward.” Do you agree with her statements (we’ll forget the fact for a moment that you’re using Social Media to read this!)?

5. Psychiatric Facility.

She willingly went into a facility in 1990 in order to confront her anxiety and depression. Winona says, “I remember waking up one morning. I looked in the mirror and thought, Am I going crazy? So I checked myself into a hospital where I stayed for a few days. I was surrounded by people who had been molested and abused. I felt like they hated me because when it was my turn to talk in group therapy sessions, I was like, I’m just really tired because it’s hard to be famous.” It must have taken a lot of strength for Ryder to do this, however, so we have the utmost respect for her honesty. She later sought treatment at another facility following this, too.

6. Prescription Pills.

She had a battle with prescription pain pills, revealing that she had received them with  the help of 37 prescriptions from 20 different doctors between 1996 and 1998. It’s fair to say that Winona has had her fair share of personal demons to do battle with over the years!

7. Bullied.

Due to her short and spiky hair, a group of girls beat her up because they said that she looked like a boy. She later graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Petaluma High School. Sometimes the best way to conquer the haters is simply to hold your head up high and show people what you’re capable of!

8. Hippie Parents.

She moved with her parents to a commune in Mendocino County, California where they had no electricity or TV. It was at that time that she began reading books. It’s clear that there was a lot going on in Winona Ryder’s life from a young age!

9. Religion.

She was encouraged to create her own set of beliefs. Her father being an atheist and her mother a Buddhist. This allowed Ryder to explore her spirituality as an individual and come up with her own beliefs and what she wanted to follow as a faith.

10. Her Unconventional Family.

Besides being born in a farmhouse near Winona, Minnesota on October 29, 1971, her parents were pretty successful. Her mother, Cynthia, is an author/video producer/editor and her dad, Michael, is an author/editor/publisher/antiquarian bookseller.
