If you’ve never seen Weird Science then you’re definitely missing out. It’s a 1985 comedy science fiction film that was written and directed by John Hughes, starred Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, and Kelly LeBrock, and here are 12 things you probably didn’t know about it…
1. It’s Actually A Comic Book Film
The title ‘Weird Science’ comes from a comic book published by EC Comics in the 1950s, and the film’s plot is loosely based on the story ‘Made of the Future’ by Al Feldstein.
2. It Had Some Strange Titles In Different Countries
In Japan the film was called ‘Electric Venus’, in Germany it was named ‘Cool Magic with Lisa’, in Denmark it was ‘Touch Me, I’m Yours’, and in Finland and Sweden it was known as ‘Dream Woman’.
3. Two Big Name Actresses Auditioned For The Part Of Lisa
Yes, believe it or not both Robin Wright and Demi Moore both auditioned for the role of Lisa.
4. Kelly LeBrock Initially Turned The Film Down…
Model turned actress Kelly LeBrock initially turned down the role of Lisa, later saying “I had actually turned down ‘Weird Science’ initially because I was in the South of France with Sting. I was with my first husband, he was doing a movie there. I was like, ‘work or play with Sting?’ and I decided not to work.”
5…But Signed Up After Another Actress Was Sacked
Kelly LeBrock has also been quoted as saying that “they gave the role to somebody else, but three weeks into filming they had to dismiss her because she wasn’t right for the role. They called me and within a couple of hours I was on a plane from France to Chicago.” Can you imagine anyone else in the role?
6. The Theme Tune Was Sung By An 80s Film Music Legend
The theme tune, called Weird Science and performed by Oingo Boingo, featured Danny Elfman on lead vocals. Elfman would of course go on to compose the The Simpsons theme tune as well as the score for classic films such as Batman and Beetlejuice.
7. One Of The Actors Got A Bit Carried Away
Ilan Mitchell-Smith, who was only 14 at the time, got rather carried away when filming a scene where he had to kiss LeBrock, causing her to warn him “If you ever do that again I’m going to kick your ass!”
8. Robert Downey Jr. Pooed In Another Actor’s Trailer
Downey Jr. has admitted that he “defecated in a fellow cast mate’s trailer, much to the chagrin of Bill Paxton and Robert Rusler. It was a real bad scene. Joel Silver freaked. I never admitted it.”
9. Lisa Was Named After A Computer
Yes it’s true, Lisa was named after one of Apple’s first personal computers.
10. Anthony Michael Hall Was Paid Twice As Much As Ilan Mitchell-Smith
Mitchell-Smith has been quoted as saying “I don’t think most people talk about this, but what do I care? I made $150,000. Which is a lot of money, especially for a 15-year-old.” When asked what his Hall made he responded “I think he made $300,000.”
11. LeBrock Was Never Actually Naked
We’re sorry to spoil some of your teenage fantasies, but Kelly LeBrock was not actually naked during the famous shower scene.
