You Won’t Believe What The Kids From Kindergarten Cop Look Like Now!

You Won’t Believe What The Kids From Kindergarten Cop Look Like Now!

Do you remember watching Kindergarten Cop? It came out in 1990 and it was definitely much more than just a normal cop movie.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was of course the star of this film, playing the big, buff cop named John Kimble who went undercover as a teacher to catch a major drug lord, when his partner (who was supposed to be the actual teacher) became ill.

In the meantime, everyone’s favourite action movie star was thrust into this class of kindergarten kids who of course harassed him mercilessly!

One of the children even claimed that he had a ‘tumor’, to which Arnold yelled, “It’s not a TUMOR!” Hilarious! Especially if you can remember exactly HOW he said it, which we’re sure that a good number of you do!

Arnie also went onto learn a little bit about the differences between men and women from one of his students.  They were full of valuable information for him!

Although there was plenty of action towards the end, the main part of this film was detailing how Kimble came to interact with the children and genuinely care for them, as well as show that he could be a sensitive and wonderful teacher, often by employing parts of his main role as a cop in his classes.

Although we have extremely fond memories of this film, Kindergarten Cop actually only received mixed reviews on its release.

On ‘Rotten Tomatoes’ it currently has a rather average rating of 51%, which increases slightly on ‘Metacritic’ which gives it a score of 61 out of 100.

However people on ‘CinemaScore’ were rather kinder, giving the the film an average grade of ‘A-‘ (on a scale of A+ to F).

But despite these mixed reviews, the film was a definite box office success, grossing a very decent $91 million in the US, $110 million in other territories, and $202 million worldwide.

But whatever you think of the film, you simply cannot disagree that the kids that starred in it were adorable, and when it was time to catch the bad guy, there was plenty of action, which was exactly what we had come to expect from Arnold.

But have you ever stopped to wonder what the cast of the film look like now? Well wonder no more, because below you will most definitely find out, and we guarantee that you won’t recognise most of them today!

1. Detective John Kimble – Arnold Schwarzenegger

We will definitely never forget the lovable character that Arnie played in this film!

He was of course one of the biggest stars in Hollywood throughout the 80s and 90s, but has since spent time in his role of governor of California, as well recently getting back in to acting in various new roles on the big screen.

We are definitely wondering if we will see him get back to the days of his biggest successes such as The Terminator and its sequels, Conan The Barbarian and Predator.

There is nothing to stop you, Arnie, and we will always love watching you on the big screen!

Did You Know?

Arnie first picked up a barbell at the tender age of 13 ,and chose bodybuilding as a career only one year later the age of 14.

He was so dedicated that he would break into his local gym at the weekend (when it was closed) in order to train.

Not only that, but during a year of national service in the Austrian army, he went AWOL during his basic training so he could attend a bodybuilding competition.

This disobedience meant that he had to spend a week in an army jail!

Did You Know?

Arnie was considered for the title role in the 1970s TV show ‘The Incredible Hulk’, but lost out to Lou Ferrigno because he wasn’t tall enough.

He also turned down the role of John McClane in Die Hard.

Ironically, the film’s eventual star Bruce Willis has a line in the film where he says that the terrorists “have enough explosives to orbit Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

2. Joyce Palmieri – Penelope Ann Miller

Adorable back then and even more glamorous now, Penelope Ann Miller starred in a number of films in that era, including the brilliant Carlito’s Way, the Oscar winning Chaplin and an incredibly moving performance alongside Robert DeNiro in Awakenings.

Penelope Ann Miller has also gone on to appear in many TV shows and films since, regularly appearing on both the big and small screens, recently in Birth of a Nation, American Crime and Mistresses, so we know for sure that she is definitely not showing any signs of slowing down with her career. Not anytime soon!

Did You Know?

It has been reported that Penelope Ann Miller had severe doubts about agreeing to be in this film.

In an interview she was quoted as saying that she wondered “am I doing the right thing for my career to be in this movie. I just had done theatre, and I had just come off of working with Robert De Niro on Awakenings, and I just was like … Arnold Schwarzenegger? He’s, like, the barbarian movies and stuff.”

In the end she is said to have enjoyed the finished film, so we’re glad to find out that her fears were not founded!

Did You Know?

Penelope Ann Miller has claimed that she taught Arnie how to kiss on camera.

Yes, you read that correctly, she has been quoted as saying that she told him to grab and hold her before going in for a kiss, so it didn’t look like they were “swallowing each other up.” “I taught Arnie how to kiss” is definitely a great story to tell your grandchildren!

3. Detective Phoebe O’hara – Pamela Reed

The Detective of course went undercover as John’s sister, and was originally meant to be the one playing the teacher at the kindergarten until she became ill after eating something that disagreed with her.

She was also something of a comedy relief character, and played the part wonderfully of Arnie’s sister, putting on a mock-Austrian accent to really get in to the part, and even admiring a waitresses muscles!

This is Pamela Reed now, and she has gone on to be something of a prolific actress, mainly appearing on the small screen in various hit TV shows.

We have seen Pamela on our screens in shows as diverse as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Parks and Recreation and NCIS: Los Angeles.

She is continuing to act so should be around for some time to come yet, which we’re very glad to hear!

Did You Know?

Apparently Pamela Reed had a lot of fun filming the scenes where she pretends to be Arnie’s sister.

This was because she had to try and imitate Arnie’s famous Austrian accent.

Reed has been quoted as saying that “inside of an hour he was calling me “my leetle Pemelah” and I was calling him “my deah Ah-nold.”! Another one to tell your grandchildren!

Did You Know?

Did you know that the release of Kindergarten Cop had to be delayed because of Ghostbusters II?

Kindergarten Cop’s director Ivan Reitman was also in the middle of directing Ghostbusters II at the time which wasn’t released until Christmas 1989.

This meant that the release of Kindergarten Cop had to be  delayed until Christmas 1990.

4. Eleanor Crisp – Carroll Baker

Carroll Baker played Crisp’s mum and in many ways was far nastier than the man himself!

She was a really nasty character, who in the end used a car as a weapon to try and take out Detective Phoebe O’Hara, and showed no remorse at any point whilst doing it.

In many ways she was worse than her son as she totally backed him in everything he was doing, no matter how nasty the man himself was!

Carroll Baker doesn’t look so mean these days, and continued acting up until around 2003 when she retired from acting and she now resides in New York.

She even managed to be Maid of Honour a couple of years back for one of her friend’s weddings. I hope she chose Magaluf for the hen do!

Did You Know?

Did you know that some controversy over the level of violence in Kindergarten Cop may have cost the film studio around $25 million in box office receipts?

This is because of a head teacher called Judy Bigby, who had planned to take all 400 of her pupils to see the PG  13 rated film.

However, after watching the film first herself she changed her mind, deciding that it would be too violent for her pupils.

Arnold Schwarzenegger himself estimated that this incident alone cost about $25 million at the box office, saying. “It should have reached the exact same audience as Twins, which made over $110 million; Kindergarten Cop made $85 million.”

5. Cullen Crisp – Richard Tyson

Richard Tyson played the main bad guy in this film, and whilst he seemed to care at times about his son, it certainly seemed far more about feeling like he’d won rather than wanting to love Dominic.

Crisp was one of those rare bad guys that didn’t have any good points or anything that we could try and find ourselves caring about, simply being a complete bad guy, so there wasn’t a huge amount of characterisation for the role, but he still managed to play the role to perfection!

Richard Tyson doesn’t look so bad now and has been an incredibly prolific actor, regularly appearing on our screens and currently having roughly 20 projects in pre production that he is working, on so he isn’t going anywhere very soon!

We have seen him over the years appearing in some big productions, such as There’s Something About Mary, Boone The Bounty Hunter, Redneck Getaway and Death Kiss!

Did You Know?

Apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t the first choice for the lead in this film.

The role was offered to both Bill Murray and Patrick Swayze, who for some reason both turned it down!

Did You Know?

Arnold Schwarzenegger was recently quoted on James Corden’s ‘The Late Late Show’ as saying that Kindergarten Cop is his favourite ever film that he has starred in!

As much as we love the film, it’s definitely wouldn’t be near the top of our list of Top 10 Arnie films, how about you?

6. Miss Schlowski – Linda Hunt

Miss Schlowski had her doubts about Detective John Kimble, and was determined that he would fail at the start, but she eventually warmed to him and came to believe he was a genuinely good teacher.

There was always an underlying tension between Miss Schlowski and John Kimble, sometimes coming very much to the fore and not being too subtle at all, but in the end there was a very mutual respect between the two characters.

Linda Hunt has a very recognisable voice, as her vocal talents have been used in films and TV, and she has also appeared in more that 200 episodes of NCIS: LOs Angeles as Hetty Lange.

Linda Hunt and Penelope Ann Miller were also reunited in 1997 for the horror movie, The Relic, and Linda Hunt has also lent her considerable vocal talents to the God of War video game series as the narrator!

Did You Know?

Did you know that the son of the film’s director, Ivan Reitman, also plays one of the children in Kindergarten Cop?

Jason Reitman (who has been nominated for four Academy Awards) has since directing Juno, Up in the Air and Young Adult.

But yes, he played the important role of ‘Kissing Boy’ in Kindergarten Cop, and has been quoted as saying that “It was really embarrassing. My kissing was half as bad as my acting. I doubt she knew it was my first kiss. Her name was Tiffany.”

7. Dominic Palmieri – Christian / Joseph Cousins

These guys both shared this role as Dominic, the child who was at the centre of the movie and the one that John Kimble was unknowingly meant to be protecting when he was actually falling for Dominic’s mum.

Dominic forms a close relationship with Mr Kimble early on, and is even seen protecting the class’ pet ferret when he thinks there is a fire, so is clearly a conscientious boy.

Joseph and Christian Cousins continued acting in to the mid 90s but have gone very quite in their acting careers since then.

It’s unknown at this point if they will return to acting at any point in the future, but they seemed like a talented pair when they played Dominic, so it’s a shame to see them go so quiet with their careers.

Did You Know?

Arnold Schwarzenegger is reported to have insisted that Ivan Reitman direct this film because of the fact that he ‘had a way with kids’.

However, Reitman has been quoted as saying that “After the first day of filming I was in a sweat. My shirt was all wet, my voice was hoarse, and I had this really panicked look in my eyes. So I developed the five Reitman rules of filmmaking – listen, act natural, know your character, don’t look in the camera, and discipline.”

8. Joseph – Miko Hughes

One of the funny kids in class, Joseph had one of the great lines in the film when he suddenly stood up and declared, “boys have a penis, girls have a vagina” then celebrated to the cheers from his classmates!

He was one of the kids that really managed to steal the show whenever he was on the screen. He was also ridiculously cute as a kid, too!

Super tough looking now, Miko Hughes has continued to act on and off, but has never really become a huge star in his own right, usually playing smaller parts.

It would be great to see a film based on Joseph as an adult and see if he has developed any better social skills and knowing what is and isn’t acceptable to come out with without warning in conversation!

Did You Know?

Did you know that Arnold Schwarzenegger delivers two sentences in German during this film?

They are said whilst he is carrying Pamela into the motel. Before this film, Arnie had never said any lines in German in any film, and it’s something that he didn’t do again until the film Escape Plan, released 23 years later!

9. Rosa – Odette Annable

Another adorable kid from the classroom, though she didn’t have the same impact as some of her classmates, she was still there in several scenes and has gone on to have a glittering career!

Odette Annable has gone on to have a good acting career, with many roles in hit TV shows over the years, appearing in the Supergirl series as Samantha Arias, House as Dr Jessica Adams, Banshee as Nola Longshadow and many other roles on the big and small screens, too.

She’s also become a real beauty, and we hope that she continues to grace our screens for many years to come!

Did You Know?

Did you know that Elijah Wood could have been one of the child stars of this film?

The former Hobbit auditioned for a part but was rejected by the film’s producers.

He has been quoted as saying that it was “the worst audition I ever did.”

10. Larry – Adam Wylie

So cute! This was the little lad who said through the tears “Mr Kimble are you alright?” when he was being wheeled off after being shot! (a bright this kid was not!)

He was also present in several scenes throughout the film, and was always noticeable as the cute ginger kid in the classroom (every class had one!)

Adam Wylie is another one who has continued to act on and off and has also lent his vocal talents to various voice roles, including the Smurfs 2 movie, and Jake and The Neverland Pirates, lending his voice to the role of Peter Pan!

He also looks a lot like a young Robert Englund of Freddy Krueger fame!

Did You Know?

Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn’t perhaps fully focused on the task during the filming of Kindergarten Cop, as during a break from shooting he flew back to L.A. to shoot a teaser trailer for another film you may have heard of called ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’!

11. Rina and Tina – Krystle and Tiffany Mataras

The twins with the same hair and clothing, they always stood out in any scenes that they appeared in during the film.

They didn’t have a lot to do in the film, but due to their being two of them, they always caught your attention when they appeared on screen.

Krystle and Tiffany Mataras have not appeared in too many things since Kindergarten Cop, but do appear occasionally on our screens, usually together still, so they are clearly inseparable.

Their most recent acting turn was in 2012’s 100,000 Zombie Heads – was that one that you saw, and did you notice them in the film?

Did You Know?

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s contract for Kindergarten Cop said that he and all of his staff had to be provided with a private studio for daily workouts and weightlifting.

A studio was located, but an agreement could not be reached, so Arnie threatened to pull out of the film completely!

Luckily a local business owner rectified the situation by donating an empty commercial space which Arnie decided would be suitable, so the production was then able to continue.

12. Harvey – Ross Malinger

Now we can see how long ago this movie was because of how grown up he is looking now!

Harvey was one of the kids in the classroom although he didn’t have much of an actual part to play for much of the movie.

It’s amazing how many kids were in the film when you think about it, and it’s great that they have all stuck in the memory to some degree.

Ross Malinger has done the occasional bit of acting work since but very little and hasn’t acted now for several years.

There is not a huge amount of information as to what he’s now up to, as he seems to want to stay out of the limelight, which is fair enough!

Did You Know?

It was announced as a prank on April Fool’s day 2012 that Kindergarten Cop had been selected for a release on DVD and Blu-ray as part of the ‘Criterion Collection’, which is a a video distribution company dedicated to the release of ‘important classic and contemporary films’.

The prank claimed that the film was to be selected because of it’s “genre revisionist use of both the policier and family comedy genres in the same film”! It was eventually released on Blu-ray in 2014, but not through Criterion, obviously.

How old do you feel after seeing all those kids from Kindergarten Cop all grown up? Were you a big fan of the film and will you be watching it again now you’ve read this? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments as always!
