1. May And Taylor Were In a Different Band Together

Before the formation of Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor were already members of a band called Smile, along with lead singer and bassist Tim Staffel.

2. They’re Pretty Smart

Roger Taylor was on his way to becoming a dentist before joining the band, John Deacon is a trained electrical engineer and Brian May is a PhD level astrophysicist.

3. The Detached Microphone Stand Look Was Created By Accident

In one of Queen’s early shows, Freddie Mercury’s microphone stand broke. But instead of finding a new one, he held the stand containing the microphone and kept singing, something he continued in subsequent shows and which became one of his trademarks.

4. Brian May Made His Guitar

Brian May’s famous guitar which he calls ‘Red Special’ or ‘Old Lady’ was handmade by May and his father, from wood taken from an antique wooden mantelpiece.

The videos for ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘Spread Your Wings’ were both filmed in Roger Taylor’s garden.

Queen knew that 1985’s Live Aid was an opportunity to reach a massive global audience, so took time out in advance to rehearse their performance. While some of the acts performing wanted people to hear their latest single, Queen knew their audience would be aching to hear their greatest hits, and their forethought proved to be correct when their records sales increased dramatically in the days and weeks after.

As time has gone by, their Live Aid performance has only grown in importance. Foo Fighters front-man Dave Grohl has said “Every band should study Queen at Live Aid. If you really feel like that barrier is gone, you become Freddie Mercury. I consider him the greatest front-man of all time”.

9. Freddie Designed The Band’s Crest

Freddie designed the Queen crest using the astrological signs of the four band members (two Leos, one Cancer and one Virgo).

10. They Didn’t Get On With Bowie

Queen didn’t get on with David Bowie when they collaborated together on the song ‘Under Pressure’. Brian May has said: “I think it was the only time in Queen history where I’ve bowed out.”

As Freddie once remarked: “The others don’t like my interviews. And frankly, I don’t care much for theirs.”

12. They Hold A Number Of Guinness World Records

Queen hold the record for the world’s longest running fan club for a rock group, the UK’s ‘favourite hit of all time’ for Bohemian Rhapsody, and for having their albums spend the most time on the UK album chart.

13. Freddie Did Actually Like Star Wars

Despite what he sings in the song ‘Bicycle Race’, Freddie Mercury liked Star Wars a lot, as revealed by Brian May.

14. There’s A Biopic On The Way…

A Queen biopic called ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is on its way. It was meant to be directed by Bryan Singer but his ‘erratic behaviour on set’ meant than he was fired and replaced with Dexter Fletcher. Rami Malek will be portraying Mercury, Brian May will be played by Gwilym Lee, Roger Taylor will be played by Ben Hardy, and Joseph Mazzello will play bassist John Deacon.

15…And The Release Date Has Been Brought Forward

The biopic was originally scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2018, but the release date has be brought forward to November 2nd.
