It’s been decades since these first, orginal NickToons were on our television sets: Doug, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats and of course, Rocko’s Modern Life. Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, Nickelodeon is bringing back their best NickToon character, Rocko, to give him his own TV movie. Creator, Joe Murray says, “I’m very happy to be rejoining Rock and my friends from O-Town again. What I have found by bringing these characters back is that it’s not so much about nostalgia, but a sense that they still feel relevant and fresh to me, and after 20 years, they can’t wait to comment on modern life in the 21st century. They still have a lot to say.”
This cartoon was all about Rocko, a wallaby who moved from his native land of Austrailia to the United States hoping for a better life. Unfortunately, it isn’t as great as he thought that it would be because his neighbors are annoying, he has tons of laundry and is generally engulfed in life’s everyday issues. It was set in the fictional ‘O-Town’ and it was full of humor that all parents certainly enjoyed for its adult content. The creator, Joe Murray, originally made up this character for an unpublished comic book series in the late 80s and then later pitched it to Nickelodeon without thinking too much about it. To his surprised, they loved it! The network even gave the creative staff liberty with this cartoon and they managed to make it a huge success. It began in September of 1993 and ended in November of 1996 with a total of 52 episodes.
Nickelodeon will also be resurrecting other programs from the past such as ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ and ‘Hey Arnold!’ to be made into a TV movie as well. Let’s take a look at a clip from ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’:
